WOMEN’S
BJJ
Strength. Skill. Safety. Sisterhood.
We believe Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective, empowering martial arts for women, and we’re proud to offer a training space where women can move, learn, and train in a safe and inviting environment.
Whether you’re a total beginner, a lifelong athlete, a mom looking to get strong again, or a competitor seeking clean rounds, you belong here.
Experience a community where women challenge, support, and uplift each other while mastering techniques that truly work.

Why BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is designed for leverage and strategy, not strength. That’s why it’s especially powerful for women.
With the right training, you’ll learn to:
- Build strength, confidence, and clarity that shows up everywhere else in life.
- Control space, even against someone bigger.
- Stay calm and escape under pressure.
- Set boundaries—and back them up.
I was nervous walking into a room full of men, but that didn’t last long. The energy here is so welcoming, and the training is the best I’ve ever had. I feel strong—and respected.”

What To Expect
Our women train in all classes, not just women-only ones. That means you’ll be part of the full team, but with extra attention to your safety, comfort, and learning style.
At The MATS Academy, you can expect:
- Coaches who respect your voice, your body, and your space
- Clean, respectful training partners
- Gi and No-Gi classes available
- Scalable technique with clear progress tracking
- A supportive environment that challenges without overwhelming
New? You’ll start with the basics—how to move, how to defend yourself, and how to feel in control.
Experienced? You’ll find partners, crisp technique, and high-level coaching that’s serious without being intimidating.
What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
At The Mats Academy, we train both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because each format develops different skills and helps build a complete grappler.
Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing the traditional BJJ uniform called a Gi. The gi is similar to a judo uniform but more fitted to the athlete’s body. Training in the gi allows athletes to use the fabric of the jacket and pants for grips, control, and submissions.
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced without the uniform. Instead, athletes typically wear a rash guard and grappling shorts. Without the gi, you can’t grab clothing, so the focus shifts more toward body positioning, movement, and controlling your opponent using grips on the body rather than fabric.
At The Mats Academy, we offer both.
Training in both formats helps athletes develop a well-rounded skill set while improving physical performance, resilience, and technical understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our goal is to create complete athletes who can perform and adapt on the mat—whether training in the gi or without it.
Quick Summary
- Gi: Traditional uniform, more grip options, technical control using the fabric.
- No-Gi: Rash guard and shorts, faster pace, relies more on body positioning and movement.
- Best approach: Train both to develop a complete Jiu-Jitsu game.
If you’re new, don’t worry about having the perfect gear—just come train. Many students start in shorts and a T-shirt for their first class and build from there
Do women train here?
Absolutely. Our women’s presence on the mat is strong—beginners, athletes, and competitors alike. Jiu-Jitsu is especially effective for women because it doesn’t rely on power. We take great care to make sure the training environment is respectful, clean, and supportive.
Do I need experience?
Nope. Most people who walk through our doors have zero background in martial arts. Our coaches will meet you where you’re at and help you grow from there.
What age can my child start?
Kids can start as young as 5 years old. That’s when they’re typically ready to follow instruction, engage in class structure, and begin the foundations of Jiu-Jitsu.
Who Trains Here?
You’ll find a diverse mix of athletes on our mats:
– Parents getting strong again
– Professionals decompressing after work
– Black belts who want a clean, intelligent training room
– Returners who needed a break and found their way back
– Beginners who just decided to stop waiting
Some are training for tournaments, while some are training for life while all are here to get better!
What should I wear?
A clean t-shirt and yoga pants or shorts are great for your first class. We have loaner gear available and uniforms for sale if you decide to continue.
Will I get hit?
No striking is allowed in Jiu-Jitsu. There’s always some physical contact (it’s grappling, after all), but there’s no punching or kicking. Our training is technical, not aggressive.
Whether you’re coming to get strong, stay safe, or push yourself further—you don’t have to do it alone.
