OPEN MAT
BJJ

An open invitation to train

During our open mat, we open our doors to the broader Jiu-Jitsu community—not just to provide mat space, but to share what makes The MATS different.

This space serves multiple purposes:
    •    A proving ground for technical development through live rounds
    •    An opportunity for returning athletes to ease back into training
    •    A welcome invitation for visitors to experience our coaching culture firsthand
    •    A low-pressure entry point for those exploring Jiu-Jitsu and wanting to observe our environment

A black-and-white, eye-level shot captures two men grappling on a gym floor during a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) session.
The man on top, seen from behind, wears a dark, short-sleeved rash guard with a large white graphic and dark shorts. He is positioned over his opponent, his head lowered as he works for control.
The man on the bottom is lying on his back, looking upward with a focused expression. He wears a dark t-shirt and shorts, and his arms are heavily covered in tattoos. He is actively defending, using his legs and arms to manage the distance and weight of the person on top.
The background is a gym setting with workout equipment, including a pull-up rack and wall bars. A few spectators, including a woman and a child, are seated in the background, observing the session.

Why Attend Open Mat

Open Mat enriches your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience in meaningful ways. Participants often find that extra mat time helps:

  • Build Confidence: Apply techniques in real situations and grow your comfort with live movement.
  • Improve Fluidity: Reinforce muscle memory and timing through repetition and varied pace training.
  • Expand Your Network: Roll with classmates you don’t normally train with and broaden your community.
  • Enjoy Freedom to Train: Train the way you want — with focus, curiosity, and personal goals in mind.

I love regular classes, but Open Mat lets me slow down, drill with purpose, roll at my own pace, and truly understand positions. It’s made a huge difference in my progress.

What to Expect

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Live Rolling: Spar with training partners of various levels to test your technique in real situations.
  • Drilling and Development: Use this time to reinforce drills or hone specific parts of your game.
  • Community Connection: Meet teammates, share insights, and strengthen your bonds with others on the mats.
  • Flexible Training: Train at your pace, pick partners, and focus on areas you want to improve most.

This session isn’t a class with a structured curriculum — there’s no prescribed lesson plan and no coach leading from the front. Instead, it’s an open space where you take initiative. Whether you want extra reps, varied partners, or a calm training session, Open Mat creates that opportunity.
